PUMA Receives German Sustainability Award

On November 26, 2010 the sport lifestyle company PUMA won the German Sustainability Award 2010 for the most sustainable future strategy.

In the last five years, PUMA has actively collected, evaluated and acted upon the environmental key performance indicators for its various areas of business at its branch offices and main headquarters. This has enabled the company to reduce its carbon footprint. PUMA has also set goals for 2015 as part of its sustainability programme. The lifestyle sports company has developed a sustainability index (S-Index) for customers, which will soon be added to product labels. By 2015 at least 50 percent of PUMA’s international product collections will be produced according to the S-Index standard. This will ensure that sustainable materials such as organic cotton, Cotton Made in Africa, or recycled polyester is used in products.

In addition, PUMA has resolved to reduce its CO2 Emissions by 25 percent in the next four years in all PUMA branch offices, store locations, warehouses and direct suppliers. To reduce paper consumption by 75 percent PUMA has also introduced paperless offices, while bringing in logistics partners to achieve more efficient product shipments, allowing the company to reduce its transport emissions by 25 percent. What is more, in an effort to provide transparency in these endeavours, PUMA has brought in an external monitoring body, made up of sustainability experts, to audit its programme and advise the business.

The German Sustainability Award, which has been presented to companies three times this year, showcases enterprises combining exemplary business success, social responsibility and environmental care. Special attention is given to businesses consistently exhibiting sustainable corporate and brand management. Around 560 companies registered for the German Sustainability Award in 2010.
