The global project "Private Business Action for Biodiversity" of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which started at the end of 2016, focusses on biodiversity-friendly production and commercialization.

What are the experiences of companies that respect biodiversity in production, commercialization and marketing? What obstacles do they face and where do they see potential? And how can the success and knowledge of business initiatives and networks be harnessed?

The project, running until 2020, intends to provide answers to these questions, among others. The aim of the project is to:

• identify promising methods and tools for promoting biodiversity-friendly production, commercialization and marketing,
• test and learn from their implementation;
• develop them further where required; and
• systematize the experiences gained in a way that enables both private and public actors to use them.

Furthermore, the project contributes to developing and strengthening knowhow and capacities in the three partner countries (Brazil, India and Mexico). Measures and tools that prove particularly successful will then be processed and introduced into the debate at international and national level.

Cooperation with and learning from businesses

The project focusses on cooperating with companies that show both a significant dependence and impact on ecosystem services. Specifically, it aims to contribute to concrete improvements in the production, commercialization and marketing process of businesses in order to strengthen and maintain biodiversity.

For this, Private Business Action for Biodiversity pays particular attention to the interests and existing experiences of partner companies.

The project is implemented by the GIZ as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
