ForestFinance Service GmbH

Why and how we commit ourselves

We are building forests – that is the principle of ForestFinance. For more than thirty years now, ForestFinance's goal has been to protect and plant forests worldwide, promote climate protection and foster biodiversity. The ForestFinance Group has many years of experience in the development and establishment of projects for sustainable land use in the context of ecological forestry, cocoa agroforestry systems and pioneering desert farming management.

The employees' objective and the basic idea behind all ForestFinance Group projects is the creation of natural habitats and agroforestry projects in compliance with socially fair conditions. In this context, ForestFinance currently offers the opportunity to generate CO2 certificates with your own forest project and to support the development of a climate protection strategy for companies and the involvement of all employees and stakeholders. ForestFinance appeals to individuals with alternative gifts via the ‘GiftTree’ Shop (www.geschenkbaum.de), where forest, tree and animal sponsorships can be purchased and gifted as a direct contribution to actual forest and species protection in Panama and Peru. The company works with renowned climate protection and sustainability standards as well as Panamanian species conservation experts to maximise ecological benefits and ensure maximum transparency.

In 2010, ForestFinance was the first German company worldwide to be honoured with the ‘FSC Global Partner Award’ in the ‘Financial Services’ category. ForestFinance's reforestation projects promote the improvement of biodiversity and create new, near-natural secondary forests with a secure long-term existence. By reforesting in mixed cultivation with valuable, fast-growing and indigenous tree species, the ecological benefit is significantly higher than that of a monoculture. Only degraded areas, such as fallow former cattle pastures that could not naturally regenerate into a forest system, are reforested.

Existing forests within the forestry areas will be permanently preserved and protected. Together with the reforested fallow land, these nature conservation areas form stepping stone biotopes for many rare animal and plant species. With success: a study by the Technical University of Munich on the distribution mechanisms of plants in the ForestFinance forests revealed that 90 per cent of the species found are distributed by animals. This corresponds to the distribution structure of natural ecosystems and shows that ForestFinance areas are an approved habitat for native animal species.

Did you know that the combination of fertile soils, mixed forests and insectivorous birds is ForestFinance's formula for success? Mixed forests not only provide a habitat for numerous animals and plants, but also offer advantages in terms of cultivation. In contrast to monocultures, mixed cultures do not erode the soil. The high biodiversity of ForestFinance mixed forests also makes them far less susceptible to pest infestation and disease than monocultures. For example, ForestFinance forests are home to numerous bird species, which in turn feed on harmful insects. As a result, the use of chemicals is minimised compared to monocultures.
