Why and how we commit ourselves
The Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP) is a Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) consisting of over fifty enterprises, associations, non-governmental organisations, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The FONAP secretariat is part of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The aim of FONAP e.V. is to promote sustainable agricultural supply chains with a focus on palm oil. Since its foundation in 2015, FONAP has been committed to more sustainable palm oil cultivation in the countries of origin. The aim is to increase the sale of certified sustainable palm oil for food, feed and chemical products and to respect human rights and uphold them along the entire supply chain. Enterprises get involved in our multi-stakeholder partnership in order to tackle challenges, such as their obligation to be diligent in complying with human rights, and certification issues, not only internally, but together. FONAP members have several different means of participating available to them e.g. exchanges within the framework of specialist events, participating in working groups and supporting a FONAP smallholder project.
The preservation of biodiversity is a central concern of FONAP e.V., whose members commit to mitigating the negative impacts of palm oil cultivation on biodiversity and ecosystems through an additional criterion.
