With this mid-2017 newsletter we would like to keep you up to date on some of the latest activities of our business and biodiversity network and on further developments. Enjoy reading and do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Two interesting conferences in Frankfurt in October will provide a good opportunity to meet and network. By the way, many of our members are providing their new progress reports to our Leadership Declaration during these weeks and months, you may be interested to have a look at the companies' approaches. The CBD highlights the reports as a good example for biodiversity reporting.

BahnLog joins 'Biodiversity in Good Company'

The board of the 'Biodiversity in Good Company' Initiative welcomed a new member in June: the company BahnLog Bahnlogistik und Service GmbH. BahnLog is an SME in Kirkel, Saarland, Germany. The railway undertaking and railway infrastructure undertaking is, among other things, a service provider to Deutsche Bahn. On the company site, a former customs station, BahnLog is committed to a comprehensive species protection concept.

30 associations support the "Enterprise Biological Diversity 2020" platform

The Federal Ministry for the Environment initiated "Enterprise Biological Diversity 2020" in 2013. Creating this round table was an important step to expand a sustainable and structured dialogue with business. Meanwhile the number of supporting associations has increased to 30.

National Business & Biodiversity platforms from across Europe convened in Brussels on 17 May 2017

20 representatives from different Business & Biodiversity platforms and initiatives across Europe, among them Carolin Boßmeyer from the 'Biodiversity in Good Company' Initiative, came together on 17 May 2017 in Brussels to share experiences and explore cooperation. The meeting aimed to discuss key questions such as maintaining business engagement, developing tools and addressing key challenges with regard to incorporating biodiversity and natural capital into business decisions.

New global GIZ project "Private Business Action for Biodiversity“

The global project "Private Business Action for Biodiversity" of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which started at the end of 2016, focusses on biodiversity-friendly production and commercialization.

"The Green Wave 2017" in Japan - Aleph contributes with three biodiversity activities

This year, Japan again contributed with an extensive programme to the global biodiversity campaign "The Green Wave", which is directed especially towards young people. The restaurant chain Aleph participated with three activities.

Invitation and preliminary programme 4th/5th Oct 2017: "Business, biodiversity & natural capital – Ambitions, risks & opportunities"

One challenge – one location – two conferences: The EU B@B Platform of the European Commission and the Global Nature Fund (GNF) are joining forces in tackling the challenge for businesses in integrating biodiversity and natural capital. Two conferences under the common motto “Business, biodiversity & natural capital | Ambitions, risks & opportunities” will bring frontrunners and newcomers together with leading scientists, government officials and nature conservation organisations in Frankfurt/Main on 4th and 5th October 2017. 'Biodiversity in Good Company' will contribute to both events.

4 October 2017: EU B@B Annual Conference – How to set an ambition level? (language: English)
5 October 2017: GNF – Integrating Natural Capital into Your Business (language: English, some breakout sessions offered in German)

Initiative for a better integration of biodiversity in the Natural Capital Protocol

In recognition of the biodiversity challenges that remain with the Protocol, the Natural Capital Coalition has launched a project, led by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI), to strengthen biodiversity in the Protocol and associated sector guides. 'Biodiversity in Good Company' will contribute to this challenging task.

How do sustainability standards integrate biological diversity? This question attracts an increasing attention. The "Standards and Biodiversity" Thematic Review had a look into 15 voluntary standards in the agriculture sector.

UN General Assembly adopts Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030

On 27 April 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030. The first-ever common UN forest strategy is a wide-reaching framework aimed at halting deforestation and forest degradation.

Insect Respect wins Commitment Award of the Bertelsmann Foundation: "My good example" 2017

Insect Respect was awarded for its "strengthening of the awareness for biodiversity and the ecological value of insects".
