Where does GIZ stand with their corporate environmental management? GIZ Climate and Environmental Report 2016

You can now find the most important figures in the newly published Climate and Environmental Report 2016. Among other positive developments, CO2 emissions per employee caused by mobility have been reduced by around five percent in the last three years (2014-2016). On the other hand, this also led due to a growing order volume and more staff to a rise in total CO2 emissions of around 10% to now 22.509 metric tons. Total CO2 emissions will now be made climate neutral according to GIZ obligation. So far, CO2 emissions emitted abroad enter the balance sheet, but they are not yet made climate neutral systematically. In comparison to CO2 emissions, the environmental aspect “paper” has developed towards a much more pleasant direction. Both total and per capita consumption of printing paper decreased significantly. This is also due to the new printer policy, which yielded quick results.

GIZ has been reviewing its environmental data since 1999 in an annual environmental report, which has focussed mostly on consumption of resources and GHG emissions in Germany so far. In addition, an extensive and systematic data evaluation of the field structure had not taken place. By introducing the Corporate Sustainability Handprint (CSH), worldwide environmental data can now be collected. This marks a crucial step for GIZ, to ensure a credible sustainability reporting and to implement steering measures. In the GIZ sustainability programme, GIZ has set the goal to reduce CO2 emissions in Germany and abroad significantly, while also compensating the emissions of the field structure.

The Climate and Environmental Report 2016 also introduces the new GIZ Environmental Programme. In 2016, GIZ significantly expanded their EMAS obligations once again by receiving certification of the new building in Bonn, the International Training Centre in Feldafing and House 7 in Eschborn. It is also in this context, that the Meander Building in Bonn received gold certification in accordance with the criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGBN) in the same year.

In 2016, GIZ was able to make the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions from our German locations climate neutral for the second time. In a first for the company, GIZ used certificates from a climate action project of their own in Thailand. These certificates meet the high Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) gold standard.
