Annual conference of the EU B@B Platform
Brussels, 21 November 2014 – About 120 participants joined the Annual Conference of the EU Business @ Biodiversity Platform on 21 November in Brussels. In his opening speech, the new European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, appreciated the existence and work of the platform.
The main purpose of the meeting was to present and reflect the outcome of the three workstreams of the platform and to help identify the priorities for the next year. The three workstreams are:
- Natural Capital Accounting
- Innovation for Biodiversity and Business
- Access to Finance and Innovative Finance Mechanisms.
Members of 'Biodiversity in Good Company' such as HeidelbergCement and the trust bank Sumitomo Trust had contributed case studies and other information to the working process. The three workstreams will be continued in 2015. François Wakenhut, Head of Unit Biodiversity DG Environment, said the EU B@B Platform was a "key vehicle" and tool for the Commission in order to implement the EU Biodiversity Strategy. He emphasized the close connection of the workstreams to the agenda of the Commission.
