GIZ – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

The Initiative, ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’, was started in 2008 by the undefinedGIZ as a mandate of the BMU. In developing this project, the GIZ created a far-reaching network, bringing the Initiative together with actors from political and business arenas as well as environmental protection associations. Even in 2011, as the Initiative moved away from the GIZ and restructured to become a registered association, the GIZ has remained connected, operating on a partnership basis with it. The GIZ was a founding member of the new Initiative and Edgar Endrukaitis, head of the GIZ’s environmental politics programme, assumed a position as a member of the Initiative’s board of directors. Noteworthy is that both the GIZ and the Initiative are able to capitalize on new synergy effects stemming from a GIZ project on ‘supply chain management with regards to biodiversity aspects’. A number of Initiative members are participating in this project as they assist the development of a TABS model that is being used to assess supply chains based upon biodiversity impacts. Upon completion, the project’s methods and results shall be made available to the Initiative for further use and promotion.

German Global Compact Network

The Global Compact Network Germany (Deutsches Global Compact Netzwerk-DGCN) is a business driven multi-stakeholder network. It acts as an active learning and dialogue platform for the implementation of sustainability principles.

In 2010, DGCN is taking on the topic of ‘biodiversity’ as a priority theme together with the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative. DGCN members participate in regular workshops and other events during which they deal with the various aspects of this topic. The ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative contributes to these efforts by providing technical advice and fostering the exchange of experiences between its member companies and DGCN’s.

European Business and Biodiversity Campaign

The ‘European Business and Biodiversity Campaign’ (EBBC) was established in 2010 by a European consortium of seven NGOs and private sector companies, coordinated by the Global Nature Fund and  supported by the EU LIFE Programme. The goal is to make the topic of business and biodiversity accessible in a practically packaged manner to businesses. Additionally, businesses should have access to expert advice and implementation know-how. The EBBC-website offers a platform for the private sector to present their business engagement in biodiversity and join a biodiversity expert community at www.business-biodiversity.eu.

In an effort to maximize the excellent synergy potential in tackling this task together, the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative works closely together with this partner. A joint newsletter is published bimonthly with the editorial responsibility alternating between the EBBC and the ‘Biodiversity in Good Company’ Initiative.
