Veolia publishes Commitments for Sustainable Development

Veolia’s contribution to limit global biodiversity loss is twofold. The company strives not only to reduce the footprint of its activities and that of their clients on the environment, but also to foster favorable conditions for the preservation and the restoration of species and their habitat. Because biodiversity is a main issue for the Group, the Veolia Commitments for Sustainable Development published in 2014 include concrete objectives:

  • Better take into account biodiversity issues locally and contribute to the design of innovative solutions inspired by nature.
  • Deploy initiatives for the ecological management of our clients’ sites and our own.
  • Raise awareness, involve more people both internally and externally and promote initiatives put in place in collaboration with local players.

In order to improve the ecological management of its own sites, Veolia integrated in the Global Reporting Process a detailed questionnaire on biodiversity issues of its sites worldwide. It includes information about protected natural areas in their neighborhood, protected species at the site and the percentage of surface permeable to water.

On the basis of this information Veolia has established a list of priority sites. In Germany three waste sites have been identified as priorities. For those sites a clear objective has been defined in the Veolia Commitments for Sustainable Development: Carry out a diagnostic analysis and deploy an action plan in 100% of sites with significant biodiversity issues till 2020. For this purpose, Veolia provides different devices and tools to its sites like a biodiversity diagnosis tool, presentations, prototypes of preservation plans, technical guides and best practice examples.
