Forestry finds fertile soil in Uruguay

Sustainable forestry is one of UPM’s key environmental responsibility areas, and biodiversity is one of the main environmental drivers in the advancement of sustainable forest management practices. UPM has been planting eucalyptus in Uruguay for a quarter century.

To cite Rodney Taylor, WWF’s International’s Forest Director, “plantations that do not replace natural habitats but help recover over-grazed and degraded land, can help build a greener future economy. Such plantations could help supply the world’s future demand for timber, fibre and bioenergy without further depletion of its natural capital. They just have to be done right.” UPM’s eucalyptus plantations in Uruguay are an example of such a plantation project following high standards. The project includes careful re-cultivating of degraded soils, establishing a network of conservation areas, long-term environmental monitoring, and signing - a first in Uruguay - a voluntary agreement to preserve biodiversity in its plantation operations. UPM is also an active member in the WWF’s New Generation Plantation Project (NGPP), which promotes key features of healthy, diverse and multi-functional forest landscapes.
