Research from
Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) has found that sustainability leaders outperform their peers.
The report analysed 400 leading global companies and found that sustainability leaders outperformed their peers over the 2001 to 2008 period with an
alpha (a financial indicator of above average risk adjusted performance) of 1.48%.
Companies were grouped according to sustainability scores they received after participating in an annual survey between 2001 and 2008. A portfolio of the top 20% of sustainability leaders was then compared with their peers, with sector, country and other factors adjusted for. The results show that the sustainability leaders consistently outperform their peers.
