C 9–2–2 General Tips on Storage of Products / By-products / Working, Auxiliary and other Materials
Make a point of keeping stocks in your storage site low and when possible only at the bare minimum necessary to operate. Large amounts of material require high capacity facilities leading to high storage costs and high risks for health and the environment.

Applicable / Feasible?

Consider using community procurement and/or storage solutions. In this way you will be able to distribute costs for storage maintenance and procurement. This helps also to lower the transport routes and required space for the storage facility.

Applicable / Feasible?

Regularly check your tanks and other non-movable containers (even for subterranean tanks) for leaks.

Applicable / Feasible?

Make sure that no dangerous substances can leak when storing raw and auxiliary materials. Pay special attention to possible dangers associated with contact to rainwater.

Applicable / Feasible?

Especially avoid storing propagating herbal products that could possibly escape from product components (e.g. herbal seeds or microorganisms) into the surrounding area. This is particularly applicable for alien species that could become invasive species in new habitats and spread out causing enormous damage to the local biodiversity.

Applicable / Feasible?

Make sure to use containers that can be properly sealed and spigots, which are properly and securely installed to avoid leakages and spills of fluids and / or volatile materials

Applicable / Feasible?

Use the appropriate storage units, e.g. double-walled containers with certified leak gauges to automatically indicate if and when there is a leak.

Applicable / Feasible?

Make sure that in the case of a leak the necessary preventative measures are in place to properly address the situation (e.g. containment and collection of spilled material possibilities such as catch basins and collecting rooms.
