C 10–4 Tips Checklist on characteristics and design of sites and facilities

Introduction
Use the following tips as suggestions for either direct or indirect biodiversity preserving methods:
C 10–4–1 Efficient and environmentally-friendly construction methods
Be sure to use the most energy-efficient construction methods to do your part to protect the climate and regional biodiversity.

Applicable / Feasible?

Incorporate the use of passive solar power and renewable sources of energy into the construction process of new buildings. Be sure to use appropriate insulation, air-tightness and isolation for the building exterior.

Applicable / Feasible?

Decide to construct buildings that are suitable for remodeling or alternative uses in the future. This ensures the longevity of use.

Applicable / Feasible?

Ensure that you use and/or obtain the ecological certification for your buildings (e.g. German Sustainable Building Council's DGNB-Seal).

Applicable / Feasible?

C 10–4–2 Environmental Compatibility of Building Materials
Try to use, when possible and the structural integrity of the building is not compromised, local recycled building materials.

Applicable / Feasible?

Use, in as many areas as possible, natural building materials (e.g. wood fiber insulation plates, pulp composite elements, wood wool, cellulose, hemp, flax, coconut, cotton, reed plates, cork, etc.)

Applicable / Feasible?

Check the origins of the natural building materials to see if they come from sustainable production practices.

Applicable / Feasible?

C 10–4–3 Efficient and environmentally friendly technical property equipment
Make the decision for modern, efficient, harmful material-free heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. (There may even be government funding available to help finance such systems).

Applicable / Feasible?

Make the decision for environmentally friendly air conditioning systems such as cement core activation, waste heat utilization or geo-thermal heat.

Applicable / Feasible?

Make sure you install water saving fittings and sanitary equipment in your building.

Applicable / Feasible?

C 10–4–4 Consideration for habitats and at and on buildings
Create new habitats on the roof and an the side of your building. This helps to protect the roof sealing and can help to improve the buildings overall energy balance and surrounding micro-climate.

Applicable / Feasible?

Use local/native plants on you roof top gardens or green areas.

Applicable / Feasible?

Allow on your facades and walls creeping plants to grow. These act as nesting areas for birds and create new habitats for invertebrates. Use local/native creeping plants. Be sure to maintain these habitats even when renovating your building's exterior.

Applicable / Feasible?

Avoid bird strikes by putting bird silhouettes in your windows and glass fronts

Applicable / Feasible?

Allow for animal shelters on your building in the form of bird breeding aids, bat houses, hedgehog refuges and stone wall sections for insects.

Applicable / Feasible?
