Detailed Checklist 2 – Employee Mobility Behaviour

Based on the biodiversity quick check, you see that your employees’ mobility behaviour could be or is relevant to your company’s impact on biodiversity. The following checklists provide input and tips to help you on your way.
C 2–1 Biodiversity-friendly organisation of employee mobility behaviour
Offer financial support for your employees through seasonal or yearly public transportation tickets to make it more practical and attractive for them to regularly use public transportation.

Offer incentives for daily using a bicycle to get to work. For example, you can provide bicycles to your employees that the company purchases and maintains, in exchange your employees must ride them on a regular basis.

Applicable / Feasible?

Convey to your employees and set the standard that environmentally friendly mobility is an important goal for your company. Support this by using a company-internal platform that allows employees to organise car-sharing groups.

Especially in the case of commuting employees you should support car sharing by proving company cars to be used for this purpose. Especially consider vehicles powered by alternative energy, such as solar or electric cars – see link list below).

If you have a company car policy, create incentives for your employees to select environmentally friendly vehicles.

Organise your employees’ business trips to be as CO2 neutral as possible. Try to use the rail instead of flying or driving.

Make use of the various offers available for online conference systems or telephone conferences to reduce business related travel.

If it is impossible to do business without business travel, make provisions for CO2 compensation services or payments. Unavoidable travel can be neutralised by purchasing compensation certificates.

www.pendolaris.de

“Pendolaris” is the first Germany-wide online portal for organising “geo-referenced” car sharing.  That means the system calculates the addresses based on longitude and latitudinal coordinates and looks for potential ride-sharers within a definable location. Through an online map it offers a visual representation of all potential riders’ places of residence as well as places of work. Additionally, you can calculate the distance to the various passengers’ homes with a route planner. “Pendolaris” is an initiative of the Ford-Werke GmbH in cooperation with the Mitarbeiter-Automobil-Verein (Employee-Auto-Club).

The non-profit Atmosfair GmbH offers CO2 compensation for air travel. With the help of an emissions calculator, you can determine how much green house gas your travel causes. Based on these numbers you can purchase CO2 certificates from the open market to compensate for your travel and make sure that emissions are saved in another area.

On the Bundesverbands CarSharing e.V. (Federal Association for CarSharing) website, the Germany advocacy group for car sharing providers, you will find information about car sharing as well as have access to their search engine to find local car sharing services or offer your services as a car provider.

COOL e.V. is a solutions provider in the area of climate protection (Carbon Management Services) and project organiser for climate protection oriented reforestation efforts (Carbon Consult). They also work to sensitise the public about the avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions, while providing information about the necessity of protecting forests to fight climate change.

The non-profit foundation myclimate - The Climate Protection Partnership is an international climate protection organisation. It supports neutralising emissions through voluntary CO2 compensations. Additionally, the foundation uses various management tools to maintain an optimal decision making basis for businesses, such as CO2 balancing, CO2 reporting or performance management tools.

The Bundesverband Solare Mobilität e.V. (Federal Association for Solar Mobility) presents on its website a number of options for getting information about mobility.  Additionally there are reviews of dealers, clubs and publications as well as links and event tips.
